The Fourth of July always makes me a little tearful: singing "America the Beautiful" at church, watching children wave flags during the parade spectators, sitting on a picnic blanket watching fireworks 'fireworks in a city park or another, sitting at a table with apple pie and barbecue share space with a host of other offers multicultural delicious Pancit noodles mom next to my brother-in-law Mexican menudo or aunt of Jean recipe green collar of his past Mississippi.

Two weeks ago, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas is out with his story of life as an illegal immigrant. His story is so familiar to immigrants for me: sent to "states" of the Philippines by a mother in the hope of a better life for her son.
And Vargas, only 12 when he arrived here with false papers, is good: graduated from college and build a career in journalism worthwhile. He pays taxes. It helps.
In his new website, DefineAmerican.com, Vargas thanked the American citizens that served as Underground Railroad, as the teacher who changed the high choir group travel from Japan to Hawaii to Vargas would not need to show a passport or editor who helped him graduate from San Francisco State University and find work.
I know both of Jose Antonio Vargases that made the plane ride lived with guilt and anxiety and uncertainty for a chance to be American. Not one of the undocumented workers I know is on welfare or in prison.
In fact, each of them, 100 percent of them have jobs and homes and families and are productive, generous contributors to their community. And most of them, thank you God, have resolved their immigration status, by lawyers expensive and a lot of waiting, yes, but they are all "official" now.
My story is simple: Mom and Dad have moved to Boston in the 1960s and had three daughters there.
