First drive: Buick LaCrosse makes hybrid standard
A few years ago GM experimented with a hybrid light, giving cars like the Chevrolet Malibu a little boost power by replacing the alternator with a drive motor. This system did not show enough profit to justify the cost, and barely reached its fuel economy EPA-rated in our tests. But it seems over the years that GM improved the system, as we drive in the 2012 Buick LaCrosse found.
At this point, you may think, "Do they still make Buick?" The answer is a resounding yes. Buick has survived to peel the brand from GM, along with Chevrolet and Cadillac.The aim of the new Buick is to build luxury cars, leaving the single sport so well embodied by new Cadillacs and some Chevrolet models. Buick is going after Lexus.
eAssist, the new mild hybrid version of the system will come standard on four-cylinder models 2012 LaCrosse, increasing fuel economy by 26 percent, according to Buick. This means that 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, so expect about 30 mpg average. The second is a new technology called IntelliLink cab (Chevy will get an equivalent technology called myConnection).IntelliLink adds voice control of MP3 players and Bluetooth phones with the integration app, similar to the Ford Sync system.
Lexus as a competitor, the 2012 LaCrosse replied that goal as sitting in the driver's seat offers the same quality of lush luxury. The LaCrosse is not a tight car. The steering wheel requires very little effort to turn, even when the car is stopped. The dashboard, door panels and center console have a comfortable elegance. It's like sitting in a home theater room from the pages of Architectural Digest magazine.
Functioning four-cylinder car seems too big, too spacious cabin, to be powered by a four-cylinder engine. As such, the direct injection 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder under the hood generates 182 horsepower, with the hybrid system eAssist adding another 15. But the Buick LaCrosse has not built to show the engine. Instead, everything was done to mute the sound and vibration damping. Buick even set up a couple of impulse technology to counter some of the rigors of the engine when one wanders off. Buick engineer tried to explain how it worked as we drove, but quickly exceeded our grasp.
